Warmth and comfort are everything in winter, so we're always on the lookout for products that make the colder months more bearable. While knitted sweaters and flannel sheets are great, long-sleeved blankets (aka wearable blankets) are considered key to comfort. Unlike typical blankets, wearable blankets keep your entire body (even your arms) warm without getting in the way of reading a book or drinking coffee. Because the wearable blanket has roomy sleeves, very soft fabric, and a large pocket for a phone or remote, it makes sense for shoppers to call it their "favorite sofa blanket." A lot of people mentioned wearing it while lying on the sofa in front of the TV, and some people said it was comfortable when they actually slept in it too.

Cut a 72" piece of lint and trim the edges from both sides. To make sure the cuts are straight, you can use a rotary cutter with a ruler and cutting pad.

To adjust the length of the blanket, measure the distance from the person's chin to the floor and add 12 inches to that number. For example, if the measurement is 48 inches, the total length of the blanket is 60 inches. If the person is tall, you may need to purchase extra lengths of fabric.

Measure armhole position

Create the armhole template by cutting out an 8" diameter paper circle.

Fold the batting in half lengthwise and place on the work surface. When folded it should be about 30" x 72" (unless you adjusted the height of the ceiling).

Place the circular template on the fabric so that the circular edge is 9 inches from the folded edge and 10 inches from the top edge of the fabric. Thread the circle through two layers of yarn.

Cut the armholes

Cut the circular template by lifting the pattern piece and gently guiding the two layers of fabric around the perimeter of the circle. Then cut your armholes again to smooth out the edges, keeping the circles about 8 inches in diameter, just like the pattern.

Making the sleeves of the blanket

Cut two sleeves measuring 27" x 30" from your wool fabric.

Fold each sleeve in half lengthwise, aligning the 30-inch edges. Then sew the 30" edges together using about a 1/2" seam allowance. Back stitch (sewing back and forth) at the beginning and end of sewing. To adjust sleeve length, measure the person's arm from shoulder to fingertips. If you're not sure about the right length, it's best to cut the sleeves slightly longer, as you can always make them shorter once attached.

Attach the sleeve to the body

Pin the top and bottom of each armhole you cut to the large cotton batts that represent the shoulders and armpits (shown with red pins in the photo below).

Turn the right side of each sleeve over. For each sleeve laid flat, place the needle on the crease directly opposite the seam.

Then staple the sleeve into the hole in the body along with the right side of the fabric. Match each marked sleeve top to the top stitch on the blanket and each sleeve seam to the bottom stitch on the blanket.

Continue to attach the cannula to the opening. Then sew the sleeves with a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Make sure to back stitch at the beginning and end.

Unfold the right side of the blanket and try it on.

If the sleeves are too long, you can trim them or cuff them and sew a few stitches. If the blanket itself is too long, you can cut it off. Because wool doesn't fray, you don't have to worry about burrs. However, you can hem for the look if you want.

Tips

You can personalize your rug if you wish. Sew on fancy buttons or trim. Or cut a square from your leftover fleece or matching fleece and sew it over the pocket. You can even personalize your blanket with fabric paint or embroidery.
